Automatic shape control became a reality when the air bearing shape meter was developed in the early 70's. The air bearing shape meter remained the dominant technology for many years, and is still a good solution for many applications. Until now, air bearing technology has not been the chosen solution for applications requiring less than 2-inch measurement resolution.

HiRes is the answer to this problem, combining the usual air bearing sensitivity and simplicity, but adding the 1-inch measurement resolution of competing, more complex technologies.
