THE EDGE MATTERS

No matter the shape measurement technology, control of shape at the strip's edge is difficult. In practice, partially covered measurement zones are not used unless a significant percentage of the zone is covered. Each measurement technology has its own characteristics with respect to measurement zone coverage. It is usually considered that 3-inch air bearing rotors must be covered 50% to porduce usable data. This figure increases to 75% for 2-inch rotors. The HiRes rotor produces usable data for automatic shape control with only 50% coverage of the measurement zone--;only 0.5 inch coverage on a 2-inch rotor! No longer will the buyer have to give up sensitivity to control the edge.
